I originally made this piece to process things happening in this country and World. Then I made 10 to raise money that I donated to Be the Bridge to help continue their efforts of racial reconciliation. I will continue to make these and raise support for charities that help Black lives. 50% of proceeds are directed in this way.

A little about this piece.

There are a little less then 9 slats as the background, which represent the amount of time the police officer knelt on George Floyd’s neck. Each piece is made out of leftover construction zone material, reminding me of Ahmaud Arbery as he was supposedly targeted for entering a construction zone, something I do daily. The materials were all discarded.... something that has unfortunately been synonymous with black lives for centuries in this country.

However, once picked out, sanded down, and polished these pieces of wood show their beauty. I believe that the sanding down is happening now in America. We might always see some scars, we might have some raw wounds (nails/nail holes).... but it is time for us to lean into the sanding, and put some stain on (polish up), then show off.

Black is beautiful, valued, unique and stunning. Each piece is a bit different just as each life is and yet each incredibly worthy.
